U.S.S. Enterprise arrives at the planet M-113, delivering supplies to Doctor Robert Crater and his wife, Nancy - a woman that Doctor McCoy was once in love with. The Craters are the only known inhabitants of the barren world, and have spent the last five years conducting an archaeological survey of local ruins. Kirk becomes concerned when Doctor Crater informs him that he and his wife require only salt tablets, demanding that they be left alone; the captain insists that the couple take other supplies, and that they allow Doctor McCoy to give them physical examinations. Meanwhile, a member of the landing party meets a beautiful young girl, and he wanders off with her. When the crewman’s dead body is later found, covered with suction-cup-shaped marks and drained of salt, Kirk orders the Craters back to the ship. McCoy is puzzled by how little Nancy has changed since he time last saw her several years ago, and finds that his old feelings for her are beginning to reawaken. However, ‘Nancy’ is really a shape-shifting alien monster, the last survivor of M-113; it can reach into a person’s mind and, drawing on their memories, can lull potential victims into a false sense of security by taking on an appealing appearance. The creature needs salt to survive, and has formed a symbiotic relationship with Professor Crater, who provided it with salt in return for companionship, which he has longed for ever since the creature murdered the real Nancy. Let loose on board theEnterprise, the creature quickly begins killing members of the crew - can McCoy deny his feelings for what appears to be the woman he loves, and destroy the deadly creature?
